PD TDI Glow Plug Clarification

The PD (Pumpe Duse) TDI engine originally came with ceramic-tipped glow plugs. VW issued a recall that removed the ceramic plugs from some cars and replaced them with metal-tipped plugs, and included an ECU reflash. As of December 14, 2010, VW has issued another warranty campaign to replace the metal-tipped plugs with ceramic. To determine if a vehicle is eligible for this campaign, do a VIN check with the dealer.

Things to keep in mind when replacing glow plugs in PD TDI engines:

Replace ceramic tipped plugs with ceramic-tipped plugs (101153), and metal-tipped plugs with metal tipped plugs (101152 or 103645).

If ceramic plugs are present and metal plugs are installed, glow plug failure will occur due to the different voltage required to heat them.
